Using Lumbosacral TENS to Reduce Spasticity & Enhance Mobility

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used for pain relief in persons with SCI, however its effects as a therapeutic intervention to reduce other secondary conditions, such as spasticity, have only recently been explored. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the potential of TENS, applied directly over the spinal cord, to reduce spasticity and enhance gait, mobility, and patient-perceived outcomes in persons with SCI. The research will focus on the immediate and long-term effects of TENS on spasticity and lower extremity voluntary motor control.

Goals

To investigate the potential of TENS, applied directly over the spinal cord, in reducing spasticity and enhancing gait, mobility, and patient-perceived outcomes.
